Event Safety Workshop – 26 Oct 2018

Dear Colleagues

As you are all aware, it’s now a British Orienteering requirement, as insisted on by their insurers, that all major event officials complete the Event Safety Workshop. This applies primarily to Planners, Organisers and Controllers but others, such as Team Leaders, are encouraged to attend as well. If officials don’t attend the course then technically our events are not covered by BOF insurance so it’s not an option, other than for you not to undertake a major role. We cannot – and I believe, should not – make any exceptions as we can all benefit from regularly reviewing our practices and learning from each other.

The workshop takes about two and half hours and is highly participative being based largely on participants’ experiences with a certain amount of input from me using handouts – no ‘death by PowerPoint’ here! Of the 40 or so people who have taken the workshop with me so far, everyone seems to have found it useful, no one has said it’s a waste of time and some have even taken it a second time as a refresher! We focus on preparing the Risk Assessment, mitigating against any risk and ensuring our events are safe, fair and enjoyable for competitors, volunteers, officials and the public. The emphasis is on how officials work together and hence the benefit of a workshop where people are talking to each other.

It’s also been good to have some Juniors at recent workshops in preparation for taking on roles with EMJOS or DVO. Why not make it a Friday evening outing for all the family?

If you would like to come it’s 7.00 – 9.30pm (possibly starting a bit earlier if everyone wants to) at The Family Tree, Derby Road. Whatstandwell. Derbyshire. DE4 5HG. Please let me know by Monday 22nd October if you would like to come so I can order tea and coffee and prepare enough handouts. I will also suggest some pre-reading prior to the evening.

If you have any questions, do get in touch.
