Return to Orienteering Guidance for the UK from BOF, 13 July 2020

Dear Colleagues

You will all have received the Member e-Newsletter July 2020 from BOF which sets out the latest guidance on a return to orienteering for the four home nations. These may differ between countries, which you should be aware of if travelling to, for example, Wales or Scotland to take part in an activity or event.

It is important that we all abide by the Participant Code of Conduct and be aware that changes in government guidance take precedence.

The Committee is currently considering the operational guidance for the resumption of orienteering in England (attached) and when we might resume events given that we have been given the go-ahead to do so from 1 August. In the first instance these may well be small scale and need you to pre-enter and pay. To avoid frustration, we must continue to show patience and recognise that not all landowners will be willing to give access permissions at an early stage.

However, it should be remembered that you can now exercise alone, with members of your household or with 5 other people from outside your household, following social distancing guidelines of 2 metres between people from different households or 1 metre with mitigations such as face coverings.

For quite a number of people in the Club, MapRun has become their way back into some form of orienteering which also allows them to meet with others on a weekly basis. Further details about the opportunities available are on the DVO website:

To anyone organising, planning and controlling events in the near future it is important that you read the BOF Operational Guidance document to avoid making assumptions about what you can do. The guidelines may appear very restrictive but there are imaginative ways of working within them and we will share ideas from and with other clubs. Fixtures Committee will co-ordinate a programme of events and activities and publicise these widely. We are meeting virtually on Tuesday 4th August.

Hopefully we’ll be meeting again very soon in a forest, park or urban area.
