Bright Performances at Shining Cliff

A bright, sunny, crisp but very cold morning greeted the keen orienteers who attended Derwent Valley latest meeting at Shining Cliff Woods between Ambergate and Alderwasley. The sharp frost paradoxically however meant conditions underfoot were not as slippery as normal as the wet slithering mud normally encountered was arrested in its inexorable downward flow. […]

The event enticed around four hundred and fifty runners out of their warm beds, a turnout that was much better than anticipated and shows the attraction the woods have, with runners from across the region and beyond making the journey to Derbyshire. Shining Cliff definitely deserves the accolade of being one of the best orienteering areas in the region.

The many orienteers were not to be disappointed as Graham Johnson’s carefully and well planned courses met the technical and physical criteria for all courses, something very difficult to achieve. The challenging courses were just what the orienteer required.

Local juniors continue to impress with Rachel Duckworth taking the first place on the yellow course, Sarah Duckworth second on the orange course and Louis Forshaw-Perring was first just beating Joe Uprichard on the Light Green course.

In the senior courses Pauline Ward from Crich won the shorter green course, John Hawkins was second on the blue course and John Duckworth from Crich Carr and Paul Addison from Great Longstone were fourth and fifth respectively on the premier brown course.

The organisers are indebted to the Wiltshire family for use of Peat Pits Wood, The Grith Pioneers and the Forestry Commission for the use of Shining Cliff Wood and William Dickinson for use of Alderwasley Park.

The next event in Derbyshire is on the Chatsworth Estate at Lindop, parking by the Garden Centre, on Sunday February 26th. For full details of this event and orienteering in general please visit or call 01629 734042
