Wirksworth Evening Urban - Sunday 29 June 2025

EMUL event

About this event

Run in quirky Wirksworth! Seven courses to suit all ages and abilities.

The event is part of the East Midlands Urban League, and is taking place in the early evening to avoid traffic and pedestrians attending the Wirksworth Open Gardens weekend.

Please note that this is an evening event with starts from 5:00 to 6:30.

Wirksworth gives some of the most varied, challenging urban orienteering in the East Midlands, featuring old buildings, narrow streets and alleys (particularly in the Puzzle Gardens area shown), small parks, fields and modern housing estates.

The Puzzle Gardens, visited during courses 1 to 5, are a small area of old houses in Wirksworth forming a maze of narrow alleyways and ginnels on a steep slope.

Latest updates about this event

Final details update: 20/06/2025 – competitor’s guidance added

Registration, download and toilets are in The Maltings, Wirksworth DE4 4DP. This is the building immediately south of St Mary’s Church.  It will be signposted from the parking area.

Courses available

Courses 6 and 7 for juniors are mainly in an estate not crossing major roads and roads are quiet, but since some cars may exceed the speed limit, parents must shadow/accompany juniors on Course 7 which is designed for family groups also.

Runners under the age of 14 on the day of the event must be accompanied by an adult and should  only run course 6 or 7.

Guidance for competitors

  1. Shorts are permitted. Courses are planned to give routes avoiding vegetation.
  2. Course 1 SI-card limits. Course 1 has more than 31 controls, so if you’re entering this, ensure you use a modern SportIdent card that can store more than 30 controls.
  3. Collision potential. Take extreme care of other competitors and local people, particularly when racing in the Puzzle Gardens area of steep streets and alleys. Please give way to and respect people who aren’t competing.
  4. Out-of-bounds. Do not cross out-of-bounds parkland indicated by the purple cross-hatching symbol or solid pink colour.
  5. Livestock. All courses except Course 7 run alongside fields and open land which may contain sheep (or potentially cattle).
  6. Wet conditions. If wet, take extra care on the many steep roads and paths, which will be slippery.
