String Course Results.

After a few problems Routegadget for this event is now available. For unknown reasons the splitalyzer is not working though.

Organiser’s Comments

Good weather and willing helpers produced an event that was a pleasure to organise. Several competitors congratulated me on a good event, with three particularly saying that they enjoyed the courses – comments which are of course due to the planner.

It was good to see so many families – quite a few trying the sport for the first time. This is why the string course is so important at events: if only Dad or Mum enjoys the event, it is less likely that they will be able to persuade the family to go to the next event; if the kids enjoy the string course, it makes it all the more likely that they will come to the next one. Today, we had 30 entrants on the string course, with many children running more than once. If the kids are happy, Mum & Dad are happy.

We could have had problems with the car park, with space rapidly running out, and the NT attendant becoming a little worried. Thank you very much to Colin John and Rob Shooter who helped the NT park the public cars even after the orienteers had stopped arriving. This was taken very positively by the NT and may have helped with future arrangements. The NT attendant, who was rather negative towards us at the start, was effusive with her thanks at the end.

Controller’s Comments

Firstly, many thanks to Liz Godfree on planning her first District Event – ably assisted by Mike. As you saw, Hardwick is not a technical area and the courses are always going to be fast, even at the upper end of the guidelines, which they all were. As a result we had to go round a couple of times on Blue and Brown to get the distance. More of that later. Thanks also to David Vincent and his willing band of helpers.

Thanks also to those of you who took part, made gracious comments about their run and, hopefully, went home happy after another DVO event in good weather!

My analysis of the provisional results show that the supposedly more technical courses – Blue, Brown and, to a lesser extent, Green - were too short, whilst the other courses were about right in terms of the majority of finishers being within the recommended time as laid out in the BOF Guidelines. Other than going round for a third time, it is difficult to get Blue and Brown times any longer – though many I spoke to were happy enough with the distance in the warm weather.
