Controllers Comments

You owe a lot to Paul, Graham (+Val) and Mike (+Liz) in particular but also to all the club helpers, several of whom did not get a run or abandoned their runs, in enabling the event to go ahead.  I was very relieved to have all runners accounted for by 1:30.  The first hint of snow came at 3 o'clock as we got back with the last of the controls.  

Looking at the results my request to Graham to shorten the technical courses was probably not needed, certainly in the case of brown.  The many positive comments about our decision to go ahead and the courses on what is not the easiest area to plan on were appreciated.

I would like to thank all the competitors who came and supported the event. Graham had set some great courses, enhanced on the day with plenty of snow. It was good to receive supportive comments with regard to the event going ahead, it is with the dedication of all the helpers that makes these events possible. My sincere thanks to everyone that helped.

Whilst frozen pitches, ice and snow may have called a halt to many of the sporting events around the Derbyshire Dales this weekend, one event last Sunday which was able to go-ahead without problems was the orienteering on the Haddon-Lindop woodlands, between Chatsworth and Bakewell. Organised by the Derwent Valley Orienteers this was the first major event in this the club's fortieth anniversary year.

With 250 competitors, many coming from areas outside the region, this was a very good turnout after what had been a week of poor weather. Graham Johnson's well thought-out and carefully planned course made full use of the woodland. Later runners may have been at an advantage due to the "elephant tracks" left in the snow by the trailblazers but the surprisingly dry snow did add extra dimensions to the event, deadening sounds, flattening vegetation and definitely increasing the physicality of the courses. Marcus Pinker of the Forth Valley Orienteering Club (Scotland) won the brown course the premier course on offer. Matthew Dickinson came third and Crich Carr's John Duckworth sixth. The Blue course was won by Paul Addison from Great Longstone, beating his club mates Andy Sykes and Dave Chaffey who were close behind in second and third place.
