Report which has been submitted to local papers.

John Hurley remains King of the Streets after New Year Day’s street

orienteering around Darley Dale. Given exactly one hour to navigate along

the roads, lanes and footpaths of Darley Dale, John confirmed that he

remains one of Derwent Valley’s (DVO) best urban orienteers following

earlier first place finishes at Matlock and Crich.

The event was ably planned and organised by Steve, Siân and Rebecca

Mead. Each competitor had to visit as many control sites within the

allotted time answering a simple question to confirm their presence.

Controls were worth a number of points the further away the site being the

more points being available. Return after one hour incurred penalty points

so as well as navigating accurately competitors had to also judge the time

it would take them to complete their decisions. In the event of a tie on

points the overall time taken was taken into account. The control sites

were varied even included the office of the British Orienteering Federation

which oversees orienteering activities within the United Kingdom.

This was an ideal way to start the New Year even if some regretted, ever

so slightly, the previous night’s celebrations.

Derwent Valley Orienteers are indebted to DFS (Darley Dale) for allowing

the event to be staged from their rear car park.
