Firstly my apologies for the parking on the day. The parking field had dried out nicely last weekend however a number of heavy showers during the week rendered it unusable by Saturday. Cars were parked in a number of different areas and our marshals did a marvellous job fitting everyone in. We hope the extra walking involved for some did not detract too much from your enjoyment of the event.
At least the weather was kind to us on the day giving pleasant running conditions
and wonderful clear views from the top of the hill. As usual Crich lived
up to it’s reputation with over 300 competitors enjoying the physically challenging
courses provided by Planner Dave Chaffey.
Thanks must go to the East Midlands Junior Squad and families for running the cake stall and anyone who baked cakes – they were delicious! £140 was raised to put towards their training activities. Everyone agreed that it was a real bonus providing refreshment and a social focal point.
A donation of £50 from the event proceeds will also be made to the Children’s Hospital Charity in Sheffield. Our thanks to Transco, Severn Trent and the Dawes family for allowing us land access, Father Joe Wheat, Crich Tramway Village, Kniftons Mobile Toilets and D Simpson & Son for straw bales.
My thanks to Steve Kimberley (Controller) for his advice and unruffled manner, to Dave Chaffey for his meticulous planning, Paul Wright for explaining the intricacies of orienteering equipment and to the many DVO members who have put up with my endless queries.
Finally a huge thank you to all of the DVO helpers who made it happen on the day.

SUN SHINES ON CRICH ORIENTEERS
Over 300
orienteers descended upon Crich Chase last Sunday as local club Derwent Valley
Orienteers organised its latest event.
Crich, previously used for a British Championships, is one of Derbyshire premier
orienteering areas, combining intricate contour detail with the physical challenge
of its semi-wooded slopes and crags, allowing a wide range of courses for
all ages and abilities.
Recent rain meant that car planned car parking had to be abandoned and alternative
arrangements hastily arranged at Bowmer Rough Farm, but competitors found
conditions nevertheless largely dry underfoot, and progress was hindered only
by brambles and bracken surprisingly resilient to the recent snows. Those
who sweated up through the Chase were rewarded and tested by fast, runnable
woodland at the top.
The course planner, Dave Chaffey, provided no less than eleven courses from
the straightforward beginners to the longest 7 kilometre senior course. Sadly
the only local course-winner was 12 year old Joe Uprichard on the Orange course,
although Michelle Mackervoy was than 40 seconds away from claiming victory
on the Green.
DVO is planning two new bases to develop orienteering in Derby and Chesterfield,
and, in conjunction with these projects, will be organising two further, smaller
events at Queens Park in Chesterfield on Saturday, 10th April, and Darley
Park on Sunday, 18th April. Details are available on DVO's website at www.dvo.org.uk.
