Controller's Comments

Thank you for coming. Whilst controlling Stanton I have visited the area in thick mist and glorious sunshine - we were not sure what it would be like on the day and the forecast ranged from sunshine to snow, all with wind. And Stanton can be quite exposed. So congratulations to all those who started their courses.

Comments on Ranald's courses were generally favourable. The detailed map is pretty difficult to read, even at 7500 scale, so adjustment of running speed to suit pays dividends. Those who thought the course distances seemed short soon discovered they were not!

Ranald spent much time on the courses and, with restrictions on the area he could use and bracken on the eastern slope, he should be happy with the outcome. Ideally, DVO would have got permission for the NE quarry area, which would have helped with the longer courses.

Viv's organisation worked well; DVO has a pretty experienced group of helpers; and I was not aware of any problems.

Best wishes for your orienteering in 2015,

Ian Cooper

Planner's Comment

I hope everyone enjoyed their courses today - the weather certainly proved 'interesting'! The winning time on the Brown was 51.48 against a guideline of 57 minutes. Unfortunately, we lost the use of the NE quarries near to the event which resulted in a Short Brown course, which I hope didn't spoil anyone's enjoyment of it. Someone commented that it was a bit like running two middle distance courses but that's the nature of the area, making very long legs quite difficult to plan.

As some of you know, I like to analyse the results to see how the times look, even though this comparison is no longer in the British orienteering guidelines. The table suggests that most of the courses were about right, with yellow and Light Green perhaps being a bit long or too difficult - speaking to some afterwards I know the jump up to TD2 and TD4, respectively, can prove quite challenging. Some thought Green might have been too short, but the long tail of times suggest otherwise.

My particular thanks to Ian for his sympathetic controlling - despite me changing control sites quite a lot after he had checked them!

Thanks also to the hardy band of control collectors who unfortunately got caught by the hail shower - Sal, Judith, Rob, Paul, Roger and Ben.

Finally, thanks to Viv for her forbearance in having so many walks on Stanton Moor and for helping me put out the controls yesterday in absolutely glorious weather. It also inducted our new border collie, Cassie, into the joys of being a planner's or controller's dog!

Ranald Macdonald, DVO
