DVO Event Officials’ Development Session (CANCELLED)

Tuesday 24th March, 19.00 – 21.30, Family Tree, Whatstandwell

In September 2015 we held a Development Session, primarily for Planners and Controllers. From this I developed a number of reminders for Event Officials, which were subsequently published in Newstrack (November 2015).

We now feel it’s time to hold another session and this time, as well as Planners and Controllers, to involve Organisers, Mappers and anyone else who has an interest in improving the quality of our events and experiences of the competitors.

Participants are encouraged to bring along a particularly good leg from recent events and issues they have encountered from their own planning, controlling, mapping and organising. This includes aspects related to completing the Risk Assessment and taking mitigating actions.

Mike Godfree will also do a short session on PurplePen as everyone needs to use it in one way or another.

If you would like to attend, please let me know by Tuesday 17th March. Similarly, if you have ideas for topics we should address, let me know by the same date.

LEI Martinshaw Event – New Date (CANCELLED)

The LEI event that had to be cancelled on 16th February due to the storms will now take place on 5th April 2020.

LINACRE Event going ahead.

The Corona virus is going to get worse, in terms of numbers infected, before it gets better. As a
competitor, your risk of infection at the event is extremely low, and almost certainly lower than
anything else you might do that day, lower than going to a supermarket, certainly less than flying off
on holiday, and on a par with, for most people, going to work. The risk of the disease itself for active
orienteers is then minimal – it is only dangerous for “older people” and those with existing
conditions, esp. the immune-compromised and those with lung conditions. Even then, the death
rate is low.
The club will try to provide alcohol hand sanitisers at Registration ( if there is anywhere left with
them for sale ) but they will need to be used before filling in the form or handing over money.
Alternatively competitors may do their 20second hand-wash in the Toilets ( Proper toilets at this
event.) But these precautions are to protect the very small risk to the club volunteers on
Registration. The risk to competitors, I repeat, is much lower.
If you are in the at-risk category, have regular close contact with someone in this category, or are
otherwise worried, you could try to bring the correct entry fee: thus avoiding coins and notes that
have been handled by many people.

Advice from our National body ( BOF ):

At present the advice is that any competitor/spectator/official who falls into one of the categories
below cannot enter or attend any of our competitions and training camps (unless, in some cases,
they have complied and completed the self-quarantine provisions):

  • Hubei province in China in the last 14 days, even if you do not have symptoms
  • Iran, lockdown areas in northern Italy or special care zones in South Korea since 19 February, even if you do not have symptoms
  • other parts of mainland China or South Korea, Cambodia, Hong Kong, Japan, Laos, Macau,Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, or Vietnam, in the last 14 days and have a cough, high temperature or shortness of breath (even if your symptoms are mild)
  • any parts of Italy , since 19 February and have a cough, high temperature or shortness of breath (even if your symptoms are mild).

See the current Government list of countries with prohibitions at :
If the situation gets a lot worse, please look at this website again before you travel.

DVO Success at Interland

Interland 2020 took place on 1st March in Buckinghamshire, hosted by Happy Herts. DVO had three representatives in the winning England team, Rachel, who won the W20 class and Jake and Sal who both finished the top half of their respective classes. Congratulations to all three of them.

Ann-Marie Duckworth is offering coaching ideas for the courses (Orange to Green) which will not invalidate your East Midland League run, but which may help you spike the control location with that feeling of confidence and success.

Event Safety and Welfare Workshop

For a number of years now it has been a British Orienteering requirement that all event officials attend an Event Safety and Welfare Workshop. Whilst this a requirement of our insurance policy, I also think it is good to discuss and reflect on our practices to improve the quality and safety of events and the well-being of competitors.

I have a least one person who needs to attend such a workshop. If anyone else is going to be an official in the future or would like a refresher – yes, some have attended on more than one occasion! – please let me know.

I guarantee that this is NOT a course but is an interactive workshop which draws on your experiences as an orienteer and being involved in various other roles in the club. It lasts for about two hours and involves a little bit of pre-reading.

A particular emphasis is on the identification of hazards and risks and what action to take to mitigate these. The preparation of the Risk Assessment is central to this.

If you are interested, please let me know by Sunday 8th March so that I can find a date and venue.
