Return to Orienteering Guidance for the UK from BOF, 13 July 2020

Dear Colleagues

You will all have received the Member e-Newsletter July 2020 from BOF which sets out the latest guidance on a return to orienteering for the four home nations. These may differ between countries, which you should be aware of if travelling to, for example, Wales or Scotland to take part in an activity or event.

It is important that we all abide by the Participant Code of Conduct and be aware that changes in government guidance take precedence.

The Committee is currently considering the operational guidance for the resumption of orienteering in England (attached) and when we might resume events given that we have been given the go-ahead to do so from 1 August. In the first instance these may well be small scale and need you to pre-enter and pay. To avoid frustration, we must continue to show patience and recognise that not all landowners will be willing to give access permissions at an early stage.

However, it should be remembered that you can now exercise alone, with members of your household or with 5 other people from outside your household, following social distancing guidelines of 2 metres between people from different households or 1 metre with mitigations such as face coverings.

For quite a number of people in the Club, MapRun has become their way back into some form of orienteering which also allows them to meet with others on a weekly basis. Further details about the opportunities available are on the DVO website:
http://derwentvalleyorienteers.org.uk/maprun-courses/

To anyone organising, planning and controlling events in the near future it is important that you read the BOF Operational Guidance document to avoid making assumptions about what you can do. The guidelines may appear very restrictive but there are imaginative ways of working within them and we will share ideas from and with other clubs. Fixtures Committee will co-ordinate a programme of events and activities and publicise these widely. We are meeting virtually on Tuesday 4th August.

Hopefully we’ll be meeting again very soon in a forest, park or urban area.

Lockdown Orienteering

Run one of the Maprun courses for a place in the league table. More courses announced now. Bear in mind the comments on the Maprun course page. Print your map from that page, install the Maprunf app or use a Garmin and enjoy your run.
See the flyer here
Look at the Maprun courses page for a number of “events” where you can run individually without meeting others. You don’t even need a smartphone as you can run using the printed map from the links on that page, then load your result from your Garmin. Or just enjoy a run with more purpose.
There are linear courses on full scale urban maps at Wirksworth, Melbourne and Allestree.
Or one hour score courses at Mickleover, Ripley, Openwoodgate, North Wingfield, Hilton, Long Eaton and the original at Duffield.
Run Allestree Park in the evening, one of the Maprun courses is a 40 control score course only available after 7p.m when golf has finished for the day.
If there isn’t one close enough for you to get to within the guidelines why not volunteer (mapping@derwentvalleyorienteers.org.uk) to set one up.
Of course many of the permanent courses also have a Maprun but check that the area concerned is open to the public.

Updated Guidance from British Orienteering

British Orienteering has now issued updated guidance that certain orienteering activities, including use of Permanent Orienteering Courses and MapRun courses, may resume in England as from May 14th.

Full details can be found on the British Orienteering web site. https://www.britishorienteering.org.uk/news/5207

All members taking part in these activities must comply with the Participant Code of Conduct which is available from the following link Participant Code of Conduct

PM’s Announcement 10 May 2020

Following Sunday’s statement from the Prime Minister, British Orienteering is working as quickly as possible to understand what the changes to the COVID-19 restrictions and the associated government guidance will mean for orienteering. In doing this, we will be speaking to a number of our partners, including to understand any differences between the government guidance that applies in different parts of the UK. If appropriate, we will update and recirculate the draft “Back to Orienteering” action plan, which we consulted on last week. In the meantime, all orienteering events and activities continue to be suspended.

Coronavirus situation ( as of 18.3.20 )

Following instructions from BOF yesterday, DVO is cancelling all events and meetings for the next 12 weeks. It may turn out to be longer. This includes Event Officials Meeting next Tuesday, and the Open meeting in April. If nothing changes, our next event will be the Belper Urban event on 28th June.

The restrictions, as far as we are concerned, are aimed at preventing you meeting with groups of people on public transport or at sporting events. You are still allowed out, on your own, to walk and run, and keep as fit as possible. For navigation practice you can use any of the permanent courses ( see Permanent Courses button above ) and any of the MapRun courses ( see event list on the App ).

The club would like to thank Organisers, Planners and Controllers of the events cancelled, and of any others which may have to be cancelled in the future, for the work already done. It is hoped that most if not all can be rescheduled when the emergency is over. Stay safe, and keep an eye on older orienteer neighbours!

Compass Sport Cup Final Results

Thank you to everyone who ran at the weekend and helped DVO reach the final of the Compass Sport Cup .The final results are now on the EPOC web site . I am attaching a list of the scoring runners but everyone who took part helped achieve the result. From our first placed runners like Liz, Jake and Rachel to other runners who might not have expected to score, well done. There were several people who were unable to go but I know although they weren’t there in person they were there in spirit. I hope that we will have a really good turnout for the final on Sunday October 18th at Sutton Park. We are living through a very challenging time and I hope that by October we will all be able to enjoy running through the forests again. Take care of yourselves in the coming months.
