    Sweat off the excesses of 2025 in our traditional New Year’s Day Urban! Matlock is notoriously hilly, and we have chosen an elevated start location, with older participants in mind (younger folks – expect climb).

    Matlock is the county town of Derbyshire and Registration will be in the Council offices. There is a combination of Victorian or earlier housing as well as modern developments, and Hall Leys, an ornamental park, just off the A6.

    After your run, why not visit the Bentley Brook Brewery in near-by Lumsdale. They are open on New Years Day and recommended for beer or coffee!

    Provisional course lengths below, subject to final controlling, and optimum route choice.

    Note: Nearly all courses are on hard paths, including some lovely new paths that were, until recently, very slippery and muddy. But whilst all efforts have been made to avoid boggy and muddy ground, we can’t legislate for all of your individual route choices.  Be aware that some paths maybe mossy and slippery and choose your footwear accordingly.
    Matlock is a busy town. Maximum speed limits are generally 30mph on all roads, and 20mph in the town centre, although it is rare that 20mph can be reached. Several major roads are crossed by Courses 1–5 and one by Course 6. These courses have been designed so that roads can be crossed on the diagonal to avoid unnecessary risks being taken. Course 7 will have a marshalled crossing on Bank Rd, the only busy road it crosses, but the crossing back, in the town centre, will not be marshalled as traffic will be much slower. Please bear the roads in mind when choosing your course and contact the planner (janeburgess50@yahoo.co.uk) if you have any concerns. At the moment we are unable to offer a course for WYJ and MYJ but negotiations are ongoing for a safe area to use.

    Beginners

    If you are new to orienteering or have never run an urban orienteering event before, please come and see us at the Welcome desk if you have any questions. The classes for urban events are different to those for forest events because the degree of technical difficulty doesn’t really change from course to course, just the physical difficulty, ie length and climb. Here is an explanation of the age categories. Women run one course down, ie shorter than men of the same age class, for example W Open runs the same course as M Vet.
    M/WO = Men/Women’s Open  – under 40s
    M/WV = Men/Women Vets – over 40 but under 55
    M/WSV = Men/Women Supervets – over 55 but under 65
    M/WUV = Men/Women Ultravet – over 65 but under 75
    M/WHV = Men/Women Hypervets – over 75
    M/WJ = Juniors over 12 but under 16
    M/WYJ = Juniors under 12.
    We cannot offer the young juniors course at Matlock but offer instead the Family Explorer, where Juniors under 12 must be accompanied by an adult for the entire course.

Map availability as of 31/12 at 19:30 - Course 1 - 12 maps; Course 2 - 18 maps; Course 3 - 15 maps; Course 4 - 23 maps; Course 5 - 14 maps; Course 6 - 0 maps; Course 7 - 0 maps. (We will have a small number of course 7 maps printed on paper for EOD).
