Successful Start to the Monthly Coaching Sessions

Coach Matt reports on Saturday’s coaching and social

Following on from the first session in Belper Parks in September, DVO’s October club training session was held at Eyes Meadow on Saturday 31 October 2026. The focus was on leg planning, including:

  • Attack points: an obvious, easy-to-find landmark located close to a control; it is easy to find and you can run hard and confidently to it.
  • Catching features: an obvious feature, typically linear, that lies beyond the control.
  • CAR(E): control, attack point, route, execute.
  • Traffic lighting: splitting a leg into RAG, which corresponds to red (moving slower / focusing on the detail), amber (moving at medium-speed and increasing focus) and green (moving fast and focusing on planning ahead).
  • Having a plan for direction and distance.

Despite the rival attractions of the November Classic; Halloween and bonfire parties; and controlling for events the next day, we had 13 participants and 3 coaches in attendance.  Following the training we had a fun social in the nearby pub, where plans for a special Christmas coaching session and DVO gatherings at international orienteering festivals were hatched.

Information for each month’s session is emailed out a few weeks in advance, with final details in the week before.  Please contact coaching@derwentvalleyorienteers.org.uk to be added to the distribution list.
