About this event

The 2026 East Midlands Championships at Longshaw Estate North offers challenging and varied orienteering. The area is bisected by Burbage Brook, with the heather slopes of Lawrencefield, Oxhay Wood and former quarry workings at Bolehill to the west. To the east is the National Trust property and cafe with woodlands and open areas that make for fast running.

We are pleased that CompassPoint will be attending!

The event is open to all by pre-entry or entry-on-the-day (see end of this page).

Map

Survey and cartography by Richard Parkin Spring 2025 and 2023. Based on point cloud LIDAR data and previous maps by Roger Wilkinson, Peel Surveys and Rod Postlethwaite.

The scale is 1:7500 for the Near Start courses (VSG, LG, O, Y, W), and 1:10000 for Far Start courses (Short Green upwards), 5m contours, which fits on A3.

The White to Very Short Green are from the Near Start (850m from car park). Scale 1:7500 5m contours, A3 map.

Course information

The allocation of the East Midland Championship age classes to a colour coded course are as per the Rules for the Region’s Championships (published version on EMOA website). Competitors from other regions or non-competitive East Midland members can choose to run any course.

The B classes are for runners who are new orienteers or still improving – so they can take part without the pressure of a full championship course. Entering the novice B classes M/W18B to M/W12B, will allow the Organiser to identify the East Midland novice winners for each class, allowing their achievements to be announced at the prize giving and noted in the results. There will be no trophies for the novice B classes, just the recognition and applause.

All courses have a road crossing on route to the Start and back from the Finish at the end of the car parking road. Short Green and longer courses have an additional road crossing to gain access to the Far Start and the western areas of Longshaw.

The White to Very Short Green courses are from the Near Start (850m from car park).

Scale 1:7500, 5m contours, A3 map.

Short Green to Black go from the Far Start (1.7km from car park).

Scale 1:10000, 5m contours, A3 map.

Start times

Because this is the East Midlands Championships, we are seeding the top competitors. The Start Kite will do the seeding and exact start times will be given out on the Friday before the event. You can choose a 30-minute Start window when you enter.

The distance to the Far Start (Short Green and above) is 1.7km. The distance to the Near Start (VSG, LG, O, Y, W) is 850m.
