Using MapRun timing with kites at control sites to reduce planner workload
This autumn, we’ve had local events at Alvaston and Shipley using MapRun timing. This removes the need for a Download Team and means that the Planner need only put out kites and stakes (these have pin-punches attached, for anyone not using their phone). Chris was both Planner and Organiser at Alvaston, Sal stepped in to organise at Shipley.
As part of our continued funding from the Orienteering Foundation, we’ve agreed to hold 10 local events in the next year, as something our increasing pool of MapRunners can move on to, as well as complete beginners and those who took part in the MapActive coaching programme in May and June. The location dot that was defaulted to ‘on’ for the night MapRuns is switched off at local events as a better test of navigation!
The 2025 programme is as follows, but note that at some events we’ve decided to use SI timing, for instance because Scouts are attending, the terrain is hilly, or to showcase SI:
11 January Darley Dale and Whitworth Park (P Jane KB; O Ann KB)
Map extended to include Hallmoor quarry woods. Full SI timing and Download
8 February Belper Parks (P John Duckworth; O Sal Chaffey)
Again full SI timing and Download due to hilly terrain
8 March Alfreton Park
SI timing and Download as Scouts attending
12 April Derby Dracula* (P&O Sal Chaffey)
SI timing as good opportunity to reach new families in Derby
17 May Eyes Meadow, Duffield
Likely to be MapRun timing
9 August Markeaton Park
Likely to be MapRun timing
13 September Darley Park
Likely to be MapRun timing
The events are always the second Saturday of the month, apart from May, when the second Saturday is the date of the British Champs. Do let Nicky know if you’d like to plan or organise one of these events – or even a larger Regional event. Vacancies in the Event Officials Table.
We were surprised by the popularity of control cards, as 15 runners (adults and children) opted to use punching at Shipley. Some adults enjoy the freedom of not using a phone or just don’t want to download yet another app. I forgot my bumbag and had to hold my phone tightly as there was an awful lot of mud!
Chris had family help putting out controls, and Kat used Edwards pushchair to carry 18 stakes, which was fine until Edward decided he wanted to get back in! Control collecting was facilitated by DVO helpers and everyone was on the way home by 4pm.
* The Derby Dracula is a fun urban event with optional fancy dress, to celebrate Derby as the location of the world premier of Bram Stoker’s play on 1924. Sal has been part of the Dracula Returns to Derby project; find out more here, if you dare!
