For some of us, it’s been a busy spring of commuting to Yorkshire JK and the Lake District British Champs, and the summer competitions in Deeside (Scottish 6 Days) and further afield loom on the horizon. Congratulations to JK medal winners:

… as well as to Judith who placed 3rd in W75L at the British Individual Champs, and Sarah & Rachel Duckworth plus Helen Chiswell who placed 3rd in Women’s Short in the British Relays, with John Duckworth, Andrew Powell and Richard Parkin placing 2nd on Men’s Short. Very well done, all – on tough terrain!
In May and June, Chris our Club Development Officer is always busy running our MapActive coaching sessions for beginners, this year on top of his full-time job! The Orienteering Foundation have a lovely article on Chris and DVO’s recent activities.
The article mentions our Hardwick Navigation Festival on July 5th, for which plans are now revving up … Lester and Judith Evans are organising this, as well as creating a new permanent course for Hardwick in the autumn. The event is aimed at visitors to Hardwick, to give them a taste of orienteering, and there’s also a 1 hour Score for runners. Jane is the Planner, and has commissioned Richard to produce a circular map for the 300m ‘Get Started’ course, inside the walled garden area. Helpers will be able to run, but it’s an Activity rather than an Event, as we are offering it free of charge.
Welcome to our new members …
Martin, Reuben and Katherine Terry, Susan, Marth and Roly Reeves, Ben Shambrook and Austin Rolland
Great to have you in DVO! You’ll probably have seen our Facebook Page, but there’s also a DVO Group for post-event chat and general sharing of running events such as PeakRaid. You need to ask to join, but one of the Admins should spot your request promptly (if not, please email Sal).
The next Newstrack (or online news round-up) will come out in mid-August, after the Scottish 6 Days, but do remember you can send items in before that so they can be published in a more timely manner. This is a hint to send write-ups of your summer travels! And thanks to Sally for her amazing photos of her Antalya trip!
A quick plug for our Littleover activities on June 12th – the Greek Maze 3 til 5:30pm followed by a MapRun with a Mass Start at 7pm. This is part of the Littleover Parks Great Big Green Week. A permanent course in the Littleover Parks should be set up in time for the school holidays.
Entries are now open for Wirskworth Urban on The Start Kite. Note that this is an evening event, so as not to clash with the Wirksworth Open Gardens. Registration is at the Maltings next to Saint Mary’s Church and it’s part of the East Midlands Urban League.
Thanks & enjoy the summer!

World Orienteering Week
Our Eyes Meadow event in Duffield was our WOW event this year, a MapRun on an area with no contours! The Ecclesbourne flows into the Derwent at Millennium Meadow, which forms the southern part of the map. It’s one of Duffield’s best-kept secrets, as the featured image for June Club News shows. John Duckworth planned the courses, then flew to Iceland the following morning! Sal Chaffey organised and put on a world-flag themed Xplorer activity for youngsters with a hexagonal map.
Only (Orienteering) Connect by David Vincent
Well done to Sal, who scored an impressive 437 points, including bonus points for the O-themed words shorts and shoes. Sal was not able to find the pangram however! It was overshoot.
Our family loves Only Connect, and especially, trying to solve The Wall. The New York Times includes a similar game called Connections. Here is my version…
Can you group the words below into four groups of four? All the groups have an orienteering theme.
Answers to David Vincent please by 3rd August.
