British Championships – March 26th 2022

Rachel and Sal at BOC 2022

Congratulations to our two British champions: Sal Chaffey W55 and Rachel Duckworth W20E. The race took place at Golden Valley & Cognor Woods, near Liphook in Hampshire, on 26 March. Sal beat OD rival Lesley Ross by just 11 seconds, while Rachel had a more convincing margin of 1 min 12 seconds ahead of Wimbourne’s Elizabeth Horsler in silver.

Rachel’s course was 8.3km with 310 metres of climb, visiting Golden Valley and Cognor Woods to the east, while Sal’s was 6.5km with 305 metres of climb, remaining in Cognor Woods. Both winners were delighted to receive a trophy, a medal, a British Orienteering woolly hat, a wooden leaf memento and an Easter egg! Just off a podium position were Andrew Powell, 5th in M40, John Duckworth 4th in M55 and Paul Addison 6th in M60.

Some 21 Club members made the journey to the Championships, which comprised an individual competition on the Saturday and a Relay competition on the Sunday. DVO had entered 2 Relay teams, but due to 2 of our athletes being unable to travel due to Covid, some substitutions had to be made to the WM70 teams.
