EMOA Event Officials Training Day – Saturday 12th October

Save the date to skill up, says Nicky Hart our Vice Chair and Event Officials Coordinator

The East Midlands Orienteering Association will be putting on a regional Event Officials training day, with courses for organisers, planners and controllers, and a workshop for experienced mappers, on Saturday 12th October at Groby Community College. It’s also a great opportunity to get to know people in the other EMOA clubs!

It’s in my diary and I’ll definitely be going along.  I’d encourage everyone, present event official or potential future one, to take up the opportunity of in-person training, sharing experience and ideas with others, updating your knowledge and skills, and meeting people from our neighbouring clubs.

Would you be interested?  If you’re interested please could you kindly let me know, by email to

We have a limited pool of event officials who regularly volunteer. They / we can get overworked. We don’t want burn-out. So I’m very keen to encourage new people to help the club keep putting on high quality events for all of us to enjoy. It’s a rewarding, worthwhile thing to do.

Could you be one of the club’s future planners and organisers? If you can’t make the EM training day, BOF runs short, interactive e-Learning courses – essential for new officials and good for updating your skills (Introduction to Planning and Event Safety and Welfare Workshop). The cost is £10 which the club will refund and these two courses take an hour or less. See the BOF website eLearning tab for details.

Done the course, got the certificate?  Would you like to try out planning, or get back into it in a low-key way, by joining Chris Millard’s team of Derby MapRun planners?Mentoring and support are on offer. On Thursday 12 September at 7:30pm, Chis is running a Zoom session on how to set-up a MapRun. These days, it really is very simple! Please email Chris if you would like further information:

We have a number of gaps in the schedule for our future events – you can see this on the future event officials page of the DVO website. If you’re already an event organiser, planner or controller, please do have a look and see if you could possibly volunteer to fill one of these – and let me know.  https://derwentvalleyorienteers.org.uk/members/members-area/dvo-database/future-event-officials/

Mentoring, help and advice are always available from experienced club event officials.  If you’re interested in being an event official, planner or organiser and would like to discuss what’s involved, please do get in touch with me either by email or give me a call on 07717 335606. Thank you!
