Local Event

About this event

Great for beginners, of any age combination, in pairs!

Using the updated Permanent Orienteering Course.

Only £2.00 for your map (to keep) and Record Card for your first course. If you then want to do a second and third course, these are FREE!

Please bring a pen or pencil to write record on your Answer Card:

SHORT – Codes
MEDIUM – Abbreviations
LONG – Orienteering Symbols

SHORT (1.7km 45m climb) Writing down the codes (example shows O4) you find on the 7 checkpoints you visit. Then at the Finish, quickly using the clue you will be shown to work out the Anagram and add the numbers for a total, before handing in your Answer Card to finish your run.

MEDIUM (2.25km 60m climb) For this Challenge it’s the Abbreviations you are
looking for, there are 11 of them. The example above is NW (North West). You write down what you find and the answers for bonus points. So finding and writing down the 11 gets you 10 points for each one. Plus, any correct answer gains you 10 more points.

LONG (3.25km 65m climb) Visit all 15 checkpoints on your course and at each one draw the Orienteering Symbol you find. The example above shows the black triangle often used for large rocks. Ten points for each one found and 10 more points for naming it correctly.

If you want to do another course the second one will be free to enter

Derwent Valley Orienteers strives to be an inclusive club. We are committed to providing events which support the safety, safeguarding and welfare of competitors and volunteers. Please read these pages to find out more:

If you require any assistance please contact the organiser. This includes advice for beginners or older competitors on the physical and technical difficulty of the courses as well as assistance for competitors who are neurodivergent and may like a quiet start or someone to pick up your bib or download your dibber after your run. We want everyone to have the best experience possible and if you don't ask, we won't know how we can help you achieve that.
