Derby Night MapRuns – Spring 2025

Results

We have completed a brilliant Spring series 2025! Thank you to all who have contributed in some way – either planning or taking part – you are all amazing!

A big thank you to Sport England and the Orienteering Foundation for providing funding to make these events possible and for Maprun for developing and providing (for free) such an amazing App. Here are just a few of the highlights:

Fantastic to have Smalley Road Runners join us for the 1 hour score around Heanor followed by drinks in the social club across the road. Big thanks for Russ, Brian and Michelle for helping out at the start.

Amazing night for a run in Mickleover with MRC (Mickleover Runners). Clearly three competitors fancied a bit of cross-country and their routes show them jumping a fence!

Next we moved on to Breadsall Hilltop! We did get a story of one competitor being dropped by her group – but luckily she was adopted by another set of runners – so thank you for looking out for each other!

We have a ‘before the event’ picture from Ripley. Great to be joined by the Ripley Rouges! The good news is that we all made it round courses. A big thank you to Sal and Dave for planning!

Just when we thought spring had started we were back to a frosty night in Belper! Thanks to Emma and Chris for excellent planning – even had local participants saying that they had discovered new footpaths.

It was a glorious night in Mackworth and even better to catch up in the pub afterwards. Thank you to Joe and Emily for planning. And for Rykneld Sports Centre (and The Farmhouse!) for use of their facilities and car park.

Heatherton was great fun with lots of small footpaths to follow and many number of cul-de-sacs to avoid. The fast and flat area left many trying to collect all 35 controls. Did you collect them all?

We visited a new area – Alvaston, courses planned by Jake – which posed a real challenge with lots of alleyways and bendy roads. We owe it to the homeowner who opened their locked gate and made the map correct!

Daylight has come as we set off and returned to the Royal Oak, Ockbrook! The landlady was so accommodating and even gave us our own room for post-run drinks.

Our final Maprun of the series was from the Derby Runner, Spondon! We were joined by so many different running clubs that we weren’t able to catch you all on the photo. Thank you to Graham for planning such an interesting evening!

Although we have reached the finish of the series, we plan to restart in September 2025. We will revisit some of the best areas, add some new, and each time there will be a new course to challenge you!

Missed any of the events this calendar year? The benefit of these smartphone-based events is that all courses will remain open 24/7 and can be used as part of your own training schedule. You can rerun courses that you have enjoyed. Do drop us a line if you complete one of our courses!
